She gave him oleander…

The dirty old river rolled on, flowing into the night. The bridge approached. They would cross over. Tired of performing a dance to the rhythm of time (often backwards in high heels) she did not care who knew it.

Orpheus Marlowe, the OM of the band, would soon be no more. This would change things. The music would no longer softly fall. It would be over. Time to turn off the lights.
It would be a night to wound time.

The sun sets, they cross over the river, they feel safe and sound. Taxi light shine bright. The venue is perfect, the room looking out into a rear garden with lawn giving onto the Ravensbourne river bank at Deptford. Annette's portrait of Eurydice hangs along one wall, confidently extolling beauty, surface and the gaze.

Orpheus Marlowe meets his match. All that improvisation was falling apart, familiar things and tropes remove from their context, recognition associated with fragmentation and loss, original relationships broken down, borders lost, definition and erratic overlaps struggled to become new territories. OM would be nothing more than a wind in a reed, a dying air, an echo in a cave where shadows flicker on the walls.

The delivery would not be poured into his ear whilst he sleeps. The vehicle to carry him away was to be oleander. Oleander in tea. It would be a religious experience. First, he would hear bells, his temples would be ringing. Then grace and the nuance of eternity would creep upon him, the sun would set. He would simply, rapidly, slip away, into the darkness of endless night.

A large reckoning in a small room.
